Chapter 1: The Purpose of Love and Logic
While I have only read one chapter of this book I love it already. In the first couple of pages it goes through a scenario involving a teacher, student and the school principal. The principal handles the situation using the Love and Logic technique and the student eventually confesses to what was done without any serious probing from the principal. When the principal was asked if he always used the Love and Logic method he responding by saying no but teachers are experimenters and there is no harm in trying out new things. He says it is nice for the students to own their own problems and to go home angry and tired from thinking about everything. Love and Logic has helped give him a new understanding on how to deal with things and the bottom line is that students will become more responsible and enables kids to be held to higher standards of behavior.
*Love and Logic tip #1: Dealing with Power Struggles: When we offer kids a choice instead of making a demand, no power struggle ever begins. When we make a demand, we own the wise choice, leaving the child with only one way to win the power struggle-by making a foolish choice. Given a range of choices, a child has endless opportunities to choose wisely.
I can’t wait to dig more into the Love and Logic approach so that I can try it out in my classroom but so far I love it! I have tried some things but you know what they say, some are better than none! It will take time to learn it all but I will do it :)
