Today we had a bullying prevention ceremony and our guest of honor was none other than Hi-Lite from the Harlem Globetrotters. The kids absolutely LOVED him! The ceremony was for 2nd-5th grade and was about 45 minutes long. I did have to leave for class before it was over but for the time I was there I enjoyed it and took a lot of pictures and videos!
Of course Hi-Lite introduced himself to the kids telling them all about his career with the Globetrotters, his traveling experiences with the team, and some personal history. He didn't waste much time before teaching the kids about the ABC's of bullying prevention-action, bravery, and compassion! He allowed the students to use their background knowledge about what they knew about bullies, bullying and bullying prevention to infer what each letter meant. It was like a competition to see who could get the letters/meanings right because the student(s) who inferred correctly got called on to go and stand up in front of everyone attending and they got to hang out with Hi-Lite and learn all sorts of basketball tricks from him (video of his tricks below).
Overall, it was a great experience for me but also for our students. I believe all students should have background knowledge about how to prevent bullying and what bullying actually looks like and I think Hi-Lite did a great job getting the message across.
