More Health has been to my school and done a presentation for my class twice this year (once this week-once last week). Before we went for our first presentation we were asked to administer pre-tests to our students that had questions pertaining to safety and first aid on it-to see what the students knew about it. After completing our pre-tests we went to our first presentation where we learned all about safety and first aid and hands on experience with what to do if someone were hurt and bleeding (while emergency response teams were on there way).
Some of the things we went through were different types of burns (first, second, and third degree), what items should be in a first aid kit, what the first steps would be after a medical emergency occurs (assess the situation, call 9-1-1, treat the victim), what to do if someone has a serious injury involving a puncture wound with a sharp object, CPR, how often to change a bandaid, what to do for a minor burn, and what to do if someone is having a nose bleed. All things that students should be aware of and have background knowledge on.
Our students seems to really enjoy both presentations and loved the fact that they were hands on experiences. Our last More Health presentation was yesterday (10-14-13) and our students finished their post-tests today. I must say they did much better on their post-tests than the pre-tests so I am glad to see that they did actually pay attention and retained most of the information!
