Chapter 1: Environment
Great reading teachers create classroom environments that constantly inspire students to want to read. Comfort is very important while reading and that is discussed in this chapter. It talks about how you could have a themed classroom library set up like a camping site and can play music, have a tent and all kids of creative things and how the students enjoy that and want to go read in their camp site library! One thing that has really stuck out to me-and I have heard it before-is that teachers should be reading while the students read. I feel like this is something that rarely happens and while it may be hard to do I believe as teachers we should all make an effort to do this. I know we are busy with other things but if we read while our students have independent reading time it will show them just how important reading it. If we expect them to do it, why don’t we? Another thing I liked was the fact that the book says that research shows that it doesn’t matter what you read; all that matters is how much you read and that people who read more; read better! I really am enjoying this book and learning about tons of new reading strategies-can’t go wrong with new reading strategies and quick tips!
