As a teacher, my philosophy of management for my classroom is to allow my students to have options and input. I believe that if I allow students to contribute their thoughts and ideas into my management plan they will be more likely to behave properly, take responsibility for their actions, and be more engaged in their learning. I will have the final say in the decision and classroom rules and consequences along with procedures will be posted on my wall and will be reviewed with my students as needed.
I feel like my beliefs on how I will run my classroom corresponds with Linda Albert’s cooperative disciple chapter that was discussed in class. Albert’s focus is a cooperative approach to help students connect with others, contribute and feel capable as well as a class code of conduct that fosters an optimal climate for learning and teaching. Another focus is student-parent partnership in sustaining a high quality learning environment. I feel like these are very important things to base classroom focus on because they are positive approaches and will create the type of learning atmosphere that I am going for. I want a learning environment that is fun and that makes the kids want to be involved in learning and participate as well as following the rules. Albert’s logic is that behavior is based on choice and at students choose to behave the way that they do. This is why I am choosing to let my students be involved and have options and ideas in the way our classroom is managed. Albert points out that teachers are in a powerful position to influence the choices students make and that is why as a teacher I would have the final say in any decisions. Another logic which I believe is very important is that teachers best influence the students through encouragement, intervention, and collaboration; which is how I aspire to influence my students. I believe that positive reinforcement is key in running a successful classroom and having the students respect you, having the students want to be on their best behavior and having them take responsibility for their actions and assignments. Albert contributed many suggestions throughout this chapter that included helping every student connect with others, contribute to the class, feel like they belong in the class, feel like they are valued, and to turn every misbehavior into an opportunity to help students learn to behave better. Albert’s main focus is on helping teachers meet students needs so that students will choose to cooperate with the teacher and each other. This sums up how I want my classroom to be managed because I want to have set guidelines in my classroom and want each and every one of my students to feel like they belong and that they are valued. I feel in order to create that atmosphere the students must have some say in how things in the classroom are managed and they need to feel like their thoughts and ideas were included in decisions.
